Botswana Safari

‘Dumela’ …Welcome to Botswana

‘Dumela’ is the greeting word in Setswana in Botswana safari country. Botswana is 581 730 sq km with just a population of 2.2 million people. Botswana is the birth place of all modern humans about 200 000 years ago. The bushmen paintings on caves are 73 000 years old and evidence from archaeological digs found that the stone tools remains dates back to at least in 400 000 years.

If you thought its just about history in Botswana then you were a bit wrong. But then again the original inhabitants of Southern Africa, the Khoisan were hunters and gatherers who were nomads by nature. The greater area of Botswana is taken by the Kalahari desert which stretches from the Namib desert to parts of Angola. The Kalahari desert however can sustain wildlife and has the Okavango Delta, the Chobe river and the Shashe river all sources of water for wildlife. Yet the climate itself does not support crop farming making it extremely difficult for human survival.

Botswana Safari

The Okavango Delta is the biggest inland Delta that receives 11 cubic kilometres of water from the Okavango river whose source is in the tropical region of Zambia on the equator. The Delta is home to hundreds of species of animals due to the abundance of food all year round. There are several game reserves as well in the Delta including the Moremi and the Chobe national park.

On the other end of the Okavango Delta there is the Chobe river and the Zambezi river that supports also huge numbers of big mammal population here due to the grazing lands and availability of water. Almost 205 000 elephants and a lot of buffalo, antelopes like eland, roan, kudu and you have hippos and crocodiles. In Botswana safari, you can be in the wildest of places but also comfortable camps and lodges that are spread-out throughout the stretch of the Delta

On the southeast of the Delta is the dried up lake of the Makgadikgadi pans and is surrounded by the Kalahari desert. In actual fact these are many pans with sandy desert in between; the bigger ones being the Ntwetwe, Nxai and Sua pans. The lake Makgadikgadi dried up tens of thousands of years ago. Some amazing sightings of the the brown hyena and lions are common here and a lot more antelopes and birds

Activities to do in Botswana

Among the best safari experiences in Botswana is the Moremi Game Reserve, the Chobe national park, the Central Kalahari Game Reserve and the Makgadikgadi Pans national Park. The big mammals, the cats, antelopes and birds you would love Botswana for this

In Maun which is the gateway town to the Okavango Delta you can have scenic flights and helicopter rides over the Okavango, such beautiful sightings of wildlife from the air.
The mokoro on the Delta are a way to navigate the channels of water here and get to the islands for nature walks and more game drives.

Chobe national park has a signature game viewing sunset cruise on the Chobe river which runs across the national park. Yet self game drives are possible in the Chobe, the best experience if you have a short stay is just to get a Guide and they will take you exactly where the interesting  sightings of the day would be.
